Howdy ShirtFighters!
Well we've hinted around a bit that things are a-changin' here at ShirtFight.com...and now is the time to throw back the curtain and reveal our sinister plans!!
Muahahahhahaaaaaa!
Ok, maybe it's not *that* sinister...I just like doing the evil laugh thing.
The first and probably biggest change is we're removing the contest portion out of the site. When we first started ShirtFight oh so many months ago, we had one main goal in mind...to showcase and support really awesome artists and their work. And I think we've accomplished that quite well...we've built some really strong relationships with the artist community. And in the process of running our weekly competitions we've learned a lot about what makes artists tick, their likes and dislikes, and what it really means to support what they are doing. Contest sites, while exciting on the surface, isn't very artist friendly. Some of the more established, die-hard artists even go as far as calling competition sites spec work. For those of you who don't know what spec work is, it's essentially when a client does an open call for artwork and only pays for the design(s) they like. It's not exactly what we envisioned when we launched ShirtFight!
So how are we going to support our artists? Well like I said, we've built some really strong bonds with our artists. We've seen styles and talents that make our jaws hit the floor, really powerful artwork that we want to have on our shirts. Instead of doing an open call for work and shoehorning artists into a certain theme (yes I know, themes are fun but also very restricting), we will reach out to those artists we love and work with them 1-on-1. Our site will still be artist focused...when we announce the release of a new shirt we will showcase the artist, even more-so than we currently do. We're going to pick our artists' brains, have them give us a glimpse into their world...how did they go about drawing their design? What inspires them? What tips and tricks can they give our artist community so everyone can benefit? These are just some of the ideas we have in mind.
So for starters, the site is getting a face lift to reflect the fact that we don't do competitions anymore. The front page will be the first to get updated (wait until you see it, it's so kick ass), followed shortly by the rest of the site. We're going to release one new shirt a month (that's the goal) and grow this new business model that way...I'm happy that we're actually moving to a monthly release instead of trying to go the other way with a daily release...I would much rather have one really really great shirt that I can't live without than a new mediocre shirt every day. We're going for quality, not quantity.
Now you may ask "What's going to put the FIGHT in ShirtFight?" See, I knew you were going to ask that
Well the site will take on a new fight themed feel, which will tie in nicely to the branding of our name. On our main page we're always going to showcase two shirts, one will be the "champion" and one will be the "challenger". This might be a new shirt vs. a reprint, a top favorite vs. a special sale...and eventually we'll get to the point where we are pitting two new shirts against each other. What does the "winner" get, and what happens to the "loser"? Well, who knows...we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. ![]()
Ok I think I've covered everything...the changes will start happening after our final Heavyweights contest which starts tomorrow at midnight! If you have any questions guys just post them here, we're totally open and happy to answer whatever you got.
so, you began the shirtfight contests and site with the end goal in mind to cut out the competitions?? you only wanted to make some good relationships? so. "spec work" was good enough for you as an up and coming tee site, but as youve grown and developed relationships, NOW its old news, and not everyone can participate? ill give it to you that its an excellent business model and idea. seriously.
It´s def. the right decision to go monthly/quality rather than daily/quantity, good luck!
SweetP, our goal was to support the artists and showcase their work...and we initially thought a contest site was the right approach. At the beginning we didn't know what spec work even was...we thought artists LOVED competitions as a way to get exposure to their work and make a name for themselves. Now so many months later we realize that this just isn't the case. We never intended to cut out the competitions, but any successful business stays flexible and makes changes where changes need to be made. We aren't changing because competition sites are "old news", we're changing because it doesn't support the artists in a way we intended when we first dreamt up ShirtFight.
Hopefully that clears things up a bit.
I'm happy you are back on your feet Jud. It will be a much more focused approach and more artist friendly as well. Are you going to do any things like Artist Pages etc etc...?
Keep it up!
wow sounds exciting, and since I was a winner before, Im really looking forward to being able to work with you guys in the future
You know, I'm totally cool with this because I love quality t-shirts (and I might have some money to burn soon which I plan on using on shirtfight shirts, I really think some of the best stuff on the web is here) but I wish there would be some more! Monthly seems like ages to me! I hardly remember one month ago! I mean, the biweekly was killing me but this is too...ah well.
The only thing I'm hesitant at is are all shirts gonna be the same few artists? That kinda saddens me first of all because I'm not sure I have much chance of print here anymore (even on a good day) cuz I'm not very well established (busy life) and like, not enough variety. But I trust you guys can work it out! Best of luck
And I like artists communities especially one like this, which it very much seems this is more artist geared ![]()
Ah so let me clarify one thing...from here on out we are hand picking the artists we want to work with, but we're not limiting it to the past heavyweights and winners! There's quite a few ShirtFighters that we love their style and would like to have do a design for us...and there's also designers that have never submitted to our site before (mainly because they don't do contest sites). Art is art, and skill is skill...even if you are just starting out, if you have a kick ass design on your portfolio site that we fall in love with, we don't care if you are a big fish or a new fish, we're gonna work with you!
Good luck with the new venture. ![]()
Good move. There a plethora of contest sites out there and not enough artist-centric sites. I'm looking forward to seeing ShirtFight progress and grow. Cheers!
good move here I say. I'll be honest I got burnt out on the competition aspect, you put all this work into a piece and then have it just sit and collect dust because it didn't win. I can't wait to see what kind of stuff gets produced now. Definetly a KO win for shirtfight!
i appreciate you taking the time to explain things further, mr Presidente. i think that its really cool that you are willing to work with artists no matter how big or small their portfolios are. best of luck! im excited now to see what kinds of artful tees and such come from it ![]()
I really like your idea of being more supportive to the artists, great idea sir!:)
yeah! very pro way!
i just wanna see some great non-aproved people here in a near future! and of course i want to believe i'll can take another chance too! hehehe
Best of luck shirtfight! :D
I'm really curious how the whole "fight" part of Shirt Fight works. I like how this was a theme competition site and it was interesting to see what people came up with. I personally feel if you consider competition sites spec, then don't do it. It's something fun to do and you made it fun. If artists had time then they should do it and participate if they want to. I think what you did was fine, if someone's main income is winning through design competitions then there's a problem.
It's great to see you are trying to be more supportive to the artists!!

I do love all your custom-made shirts here. Can you have an understatement shirt entitled casinos virtuels?
I can hardly wait to join the fight.

Ohhhh snap. Now THIS is what we need more of. ~Hooray for artist support!!~
In truth, competitions really are spec work, but at least the competition sites only hold usage rights on your design for a limited time, or give them back even earlier if you ask. Some other "competitions" have some ridiculous clauses in their TOS. You were one of the few that didn't have a 60 or 90 day hold.
Personally I'd rather stick with a bi-weekly schedule rather than a monthly one, but overall this gets a 9/10 from me.
